How to Organize a Campout
You decided to host a Campout! Carolina event because….
a) You love the outdoors
b) You want to build community or fellowship with your group
c) You like the idea of stepping back and conserving energy one evening
d) You think it's a great activity for your family
e) All of the above
So now what? Here are some basic things to consider when organizing a campout, large or small:
- Pick a location. This could be your backyard, a state campground, or maybe your college campus. You can use our Find A Campsite page for ideas and links. Check to find out if you need permission to camp there, to pay any fees, or to obtain a permit.
- Next you'll need to decide who to invite, what time they should arrive, and what they should bring.
- Be Counted! This is very important. By registering for Campout! Carolina, you are taking part in a statewide movement to show support for NC's environment. To get an accurate tally of the number of participants, make sure you and your friends go to the Be Counted page to register.
- What activities will you plan? See our Camping Ideas and Games page for suggestions. Remember this is your event and you can plan anything you want!
- What to eat? Some say the food is the best part of camping. Whether you are a gourmet cook over a gas stove or stick with the basics, you'll want to be prepared. We have some camping recipe ideas listed on our Camping Recipes page.
- Make it a Green campout. Check out the Camping Ideas and Games page for suggestions and tips for how to plan an environmentally friendly campout.
- Gear and other necessities. You'll need tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags. REI has useful checklists for camping trips.
- Campout! Carolina Happenings: If you want your camping group to be listed on the website, send us a fun picture and a short description.
FREE GEAR RENTALS: REI locations across North Carolina offered free rentals of camping gear (including tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks) on a first-come, first-serve basis for 2011 Campout! Carolina participants. |
